Louis Riel Day

Happy Louis Riel Day!

We hope that you all can take some time out of your day and reflect upon and perhaps even learn more about Louis Riel’s contributions to Mètis people and freedom, as well as Indigenous sovereignty in a broader sense.

As many of you know, Louis Riel is a Mètis hero. Riel advocated for Mètis people in the Red River and all throughout Turtle Island. He was a key figure in pushing for the Canadian government to acknowledge the inherent autonomy of Mètis and all Indigenous Peoples, as well as fundamental to the recognition of French-Canadians.

Louis Riel exemplified great courage when he stood up for his nation’s right to self-determination. Thus, it is important for us to understand the depth of his valorous commitments to his community, especially as we consider what reconciliation may look like in the future, and how each and every one of us are a part of this ongoing process.

Have a wonderful, reflective Louis Riel Day!
