Indigenous Peoples Day 2025

June is Indigenous History Month, and on the 21st is Indigenous Peoples’ Day. It’s the time of year to celebrate Indigenous heritage, honour Indigenous achievements and accomplishments, and recognize the adversities that Indigenous Peoples in Canada have faced – and continue to face and overcome.

There are tons of events to check out in the Lower Mainland, but I’ll highlight the National Indigenous Peoples Day celebration at Civic Square (6100 Willingdon Ave) in Burnaby. If you’re in the Okanagan and looking for something a little more exciting and lively, Kamloops is hosting this wonderful event from 10am - 3pm on the Powwow Trail! And if you find yourself further north like I am, come check out Prince George’s annual Indigenous Peoples’ Day event at the usual place in Lheidli T'enneh Memorial Park. It’s free, and there will be seven hours of food, games, and live music, plus tons of cultural activities! I hope to see you there.

If you would like to know more about Indigenous Peoples’ Day and how to get involved in British Columbia, Indigenous Tourism BC’s Indigenous History Month page is an excellent resource, full of information and events throughout the month. For those outside BC, check out True North Aid's event list or the federal government website for Indigenous Affairs for events in your area.

Your local library may also be hosting events or featuring Indigenous authors this month: for example, if you’re in or near Coquitlam, their public library has a selection of Indigenous works to check out.

Have a wonderful Indigenous Peoples Day!
