Procession

Attention to all avid poetry fans! Do you love supporting Indigenous artists? Check out Katherena Vermette, a Métis poet from Winnipeg, Manitoba. Her new poetry book Procession, was recently published in September of 2025. This book is her third collection and focuses on what it means to be a descendant and a future ancestor all at once.

Age Range: 13+

Content: May have mature themes

Procession is about connection, relationships, and is a celebration of life itself. With beautiful imagery and nostalgia tinted poems, this book is sure to touch your heart. Reading Procession will invoke a sense of belonging, and spark a desire to create art and live life to its fullest.

My personal favourite poem in the book is titled “not even”. This poem is interesting in both content and form— it is broken into 5 parts which all outline something different about life. Ageing, living, and art are recurring themes in Procession, and this poem exemplifies that in a simple yet alluring way. Katherena Vermette’s writing is concise yet complex at the same time, making this book a perfect read for new poetry fans and seasoned ones alike!

Katherena Vermette has several other poetry collections (and also novels!). Her first published work was her poetry book North End Love Songs, which won the 2013 Governor General’s Literary Award for Poetry and the Lina Chartrand Award for Activism in Poetry.
